By viewing his sermons and the things that God is doing in his Church has grounded my faith more. If you have time pay a visit and see for yourself or check out other other Churches from around the world that have the true manifestation of the Holy Spirit. People go to Scoan Church from all over the world, I'm planning to take my family there end of this year or next year. Jesus still loves you. It is hard to kick against the pricks, is it not? Were it easy you wouldn't be speaking out to "aid" others the way you are. If you truly didn't believe in Him you wouldn't be fighting so hard against the concept. I believe Robert Hume put it best when he pointed out that the one argument that one cannot philosophically overcome is the argument of the supernatural experience. You yourself have stated that it is crazy for none charismatic pastors to believe in God because they don't really have much of the supernatural experience. You, yourself, have that experience. You still contain the memories of healings...Holy Ghost lead services, tongues and interpretation, Word of knowledge, etc. You, like myself, probably have the memories of times when God sent someone to yourself to speak to you when you didn't know that person from Adam and yet they spoke literally right to your situation. Right now, those experiences are reminding you every day, hence the need for you to speak out as you do now in opposition. When you spoke as a pastor you spoke in spite of doubt because of the experiences in opposition of non-belief...but you still recognized the doubts. The amazing thing is that God saw fit to give you and I those experiences (probably because He knew our frame...and desire to KNOW truth...not just repeat what others "believed"). I would challenge you...and I believe you are the type of person who will continually seek otherwise I wouldn't...to really question your questions. In other words...you have doubted...now doubt your doubt.

As an aside I would love to speak with you personally. I grew up attending POA. I am currently a student pastor for a church in Glenmora. I love philosophy, theology, and above all...discussion. It's interesting that we've had more believers comment on this post than non-believers. The arrogance of both of the believers who commented above is really quite staggering, and I feel compelled to level the playing field a bit.

"Anonymous": You urge Jerry and the rest of us to "do more research" before we decide indefinitely that we don't believe in god(s), yet you haven't told us where exactly we should direct that research. Simply spend more time talking with non-believers and I think you'll find that we're largely more well-versed than you think when it comes to your religion and others.

You then move on to claim that you and your "Prophet" have the one, true faith. Guess what? Nearly every other religion on this planet claims the exact same thing about their own faith. Everyone claims to have the "true religion," so what makes yours so special? So-called "miracles" and medically unverified "faith healings" are nothing new, if that's what you mean.

"Jonathan Travis Moorman": Goodness, where to start?

First, Jerry and the rest of us atheists don't fight against religion because we secretly believe in god(s).

We fight because of what god-wallopers like yourself think that belief in god entitles you to.

You and the rest of the "good faithful" in this country think that god-belief gives you clearance to deny human rights to homosexuals, to withold from women complete control over their reproductive systems, to inject creationism (a.k.a. bullshit of a particularly breathtaking inanity) into public school classrooms, to shelter hordes of child rapists from justice for the sake of safeguarding the dignity (dignity?) of religious institutions, to stonewall groudbreaking and lifesaving stem cell research, and (in Jerry's case specifically) to spread outright lies and hateful rumors about atheists and other non-religious people, effectively making us one of the least trusted minorities in the U.S. The sad thing is that this is only a very short list. It is for these reasons and others that we fight against religion and superstition, not because we secretly believe in your god and are looking to waste time trolling a few Christians.

Second (and perhaps most importantly), there is no god. There are no angels, no demons, no fairies, no werewolves, and no vampires. It really doesn't matter how much philosophy or theology you've managed to ingest, because not even the entire body of philosophical or theological literature would bring you a single step closer to proving that your god exists.

I agree with Evan's comments. I was never a pastor but became involved in evangelical and then pentacostal churches from the age of 13. My family was not church going. I started to lose my faith after having my children and allowing myself to watch nature documentaries with them. I developed a fascination with the process of evolution. I then saw a documentary on Sufism, which showed footage of worship which looks very similar to worship in a pentacostal church. A non believing friend then wondered aloud whether speaking in tongues could be borne out of a self induced trance. Thus I was slowly freed from my belief of the supernatural and fear of god and hell. I feel so liberated, so free to think for myself. I can now read anything and form my own thoughts about it, rather than feel that there are questions I should not ask. I have slowly had less to do with religious folk and I agree entirely with Dawkins that debate is pointless. The Christian is that " my faith is right and I am right". You cannot have a logical arguement from that position. A close friend that I have tried to talk to about my atheism cites my immorality ( my wish to follow my own decisions for my life) as the 'real' reason I have strayed from god. I have also found that my friend has been entirely unwilling to face up to the disrepancies in the bible. She is appalled that I question the morality she and other Christians presume to glean from the bible which condones genocide, infanticide and incest. Literalism is crucial for creationism, but apparently can be discarded for the many bible stories describing genocide, war and murder. It is actually secular humanism that has led to our more civilized world, where at least in the west, woman and children are afforded some rights and protections.
Best wishes to Jerry and the other ministers who have to lose so much in order to be true to themselves.

I also think that Christians should refrain from using this site as a pulpit. This site is for communication between those who have chosen to leave their religion. Have some respect. We all know where the churches are and most of us have a bible handy. It 's just that now we also read the unsanitised sections ourselves without asking someone to interpret them for us.

What a breath of fresh air is this site. I started out deep in Baptist MS, "saw the light" at an early age, but as time went on i witnessed the hyprocrisy of preachers and other so called religious people, saw in history how all religious people, not just Christians, twisted and adapted their religious creeds to suit their needs at the time and then began to see how God was made by people for their own comfort and benefit, not the other way around. It has been a long slow process (i'm 67 now)and i feel more free and alive than ever because of it. If the whole world could shed their illusions about God and come to accept that it's just us here on this earth, people might become more tolerant and take more responsibility for our actions rather than either blaming our mistakes on "God's will" or "God's plan" or rationalizing our bad deeds by finding some obscure phrase in the Bible (written by old white men at a time when everyone thought the earth was flat and the sun revolved around the earth!!) that makes us feel it's ok (as in ok to hate gays, ok to imprison women, ok to slaughter native americans, ok to slaughter Jews, ok to destroy the environment, etc.etc.etc.). So I consider that i've "seen the light" again and am much the better for it. i don't throw this in people's face or try to pick fights about it, but when pressed about my religion i no longer shy from saying where i now stand. It's great to learn about this site. My thanks and respect to Jerry DeWitt, if only there could be a few thousand more of him, which in time i believe there will be.

Yes, I relate strongly to your comments, "Twice saved". I actually see my adherence to a secular humanist perspective to be far more liberating than my first conversion. It is of great concern to me, that not only is much of the violence and discrimination in this world arising from various religious perspectives, but also the reticence to do anything about climate change. People who believe that their real life is in heaven do not look after our natural world.
I believe that there is an increasing tendency for fundamental Christians in the West to fail appreciate the need for separation of church and state.
Follow your beliefs for your life if they harm no -one, but please don't persecute people who are homosexual or people who need an abortion because you wouldn't do it. I am horrified by the number of Christian commentators who incite hatred for minorities because of their beliefs.
